ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is designed to restore a state of balance to the body by unblocking vital energy that flows through the body along energy meridians, a foundational element of Chinese Medicine, which is one of the oldest medical traditions. Acupuncture involves the stimulation of specific anatomical points on the body. Stimulation most commonly involves penetrating the skin with hair-thin, solid, sterile, one-time-use only, metallic needles that are manipulated by the acupuncturist.

Most individuals experience little or no pain from the needles and many people report feeling either energized or pleasantly relaxed following a treatment. Acupuncture is used to treat many conditions including pain management, migraines, nausea, allergies, fertility support, anxiety, and GI disorders. It promotes overall wellness. Acupuncture is also a powerful preventative medicine. It helps strengthen immunity and reduce inflammation.

An acupuncturist’s view on why it works

The goal of acupuncture treatments is to uncover the root of the condition, not simply to treat the symptoms. “While patients will experience relief from their symptoms, a competent acupuncturist will also be seeking to discern the root of the illness or condition and support the patient in healing at the deepest level. In addition, acupuncture addresses issues on all levels of the human experience — body, mind, emotion, and spirit.

Often a condition that is manifesting on a physical level has origins on the level of the emotions, for example, in Chinese medicine unexpressed grief can be connected to asthma, or a frozen shoulder may be caused by suppressed anger. “Furthermore, acupuncture is effective because it relies on a person’s natural ability to heal, the body is wise and knows how to recover. Unlike medication or surgery, acupuncture does not override the body’s natural healing ability; rather it works along with the body to restore balance.

There are more than 365 acupuncture points throughout the entire body, and each one has a specific location and indication. Acupuncture points can perform more than one function.

In addition to the 365 points, there are 12 energetic meridians and eight extra “confluent” meridians that run bilaterally throughout the body. “The study of acupuncture dictates that when energy, blood, or phlegm becomes stagnant, or qi pools, pain arrives, and the body becomes out of balance.

What is cosmetic acupuncture?

Cosmetic acupuncture, also referred to as facial acupuncture, is acupuncture that focuses specifically on an aesthetic condition of the patient, usually concerning the face. Like traditional acupuncture, it involves strategically inserting ultra-thin, sterilized needles into different areas of the skin with the aim of stimulating blood flow and balancing the body’s Qi (which, when translated, means “vital energy” in Traditional Chinese Medicine).

Though the complexion is typically the target area for results, the process utilizes acupuncture points around the face and body. While clinical studies that speak to its specific cosmetic benefits may be lacking, it has grown increasingly popular with traditional acupuncture clients, and dermatologists and acupuncturists alike have spoken to its potential positive effects.

Cosmetic acupuncture can enhance the production of collagen via micro-injury to the skin, increase blood flow, stimulate immune responses that reduce inflammation, and activate any number of functional points that have various responses, like reducing jaw tension or relieving anxiety.
